I have to be honest – I didn’t have a clue what story to write for my 3rd Potter’s House book when I came to make a start. I had a few ideas, and I even started writing several first drafts, but discarded them all. None of them felt right. I prayed about it, but nothing gelled. And then one day, this idea popped into my head. I believe it came from God, as all of a sudden, I felt excited. That’s always a good thing when you’re about to commit a good portion of your life to your keyboard!! Slowly, Scott and Skye’s story took shape.
I’ve come to love this couple. Neither are ‘bad’ people, but they’re both struggling with various issues in their lives. Well, at the start, Skye doesn’t even know she is. To her, everything is so simple and perfect. But it’s not, as she soon finds out.
Scott has struggled all his life to prove to his father that he’s good enough. Although he’s handsome and clever, and all the girls in his neighbourhood and church swoon over him, he has a warped understanding of what faith is all about. He believes that life is what you make of it and he can’t tolerate anyone who’s down on their luck. He graduated with honours, despite his father telling him he’d never amount to anything, so if he could do it, why couldn’t others? It’s this attitude that causes his girlfriend, Skye, a great deal of concern.
He’s about to propose to her after receiving a promotion at work. She’s the pastor’s daughter, and placing his ring on her finger will be another way of proving to his father that he’s made it in the world.
But Skye has a different agenda.
She wants them both to go on a three-month mission trip to a tiny country in Africa Scott has never heard of. He can’t believe it. Why would anyone want to go to such a place? It’d be career suicide if he went.
But, Skye’s going, with or without him. He has to choose between his promotion or going on this crazy trip just to win her heart and get his ring on her finger. There’s really no choice…
They go, but neither has any idea of what lies ahead when they reach the village of Teganega. They thought they were going to help the locals, but they soon discover that they’re there so God can work on their hearts.
Does Scott get his ring on Skye’s finger? You’ll have to read the book to find out!
